The missing Titan submersible has 70 hours left, for living and to found by the operations

The submersible is equipped with advanced technology and is carrying five people, including billionaire and explorer Hamish Harding. As per estimates, the submersible which went missing now, has oxygen left for 70 hours as search and recue operations are being conducted.

A large-scale search and rescue operation is being conducted in the mid-Atlantic after a Titan submersible carrying five people went missing during the exploration of Titanic’s remnants on Sunday.

As per information from the US Coast Guard, contact with the submersible was lost about 1 hour and 45 minutes after it dived into the waters.

OceanGate, a private company, the manafacturers of the submersible, said that all options were being explored to rescue the five people onboard.

Government agencies, the US and Canadian navies and commercial deep-sea firms are helping the rescue operation, officials said.

Titanic’s remnants lie about 435 miles or 700 km, south of St. John’s Newfoundland but the operation is being carried out from Boston in Massachusetts.

The submersible is said to be equal to the size of a truck and can accommodate five people. It also contains a supply of oxygen for emergency which lasts for four days.

On Monday, Rear Admiral John Mauger, in charge of the US Coast Guard in a press conference said ” We anticipate there is somewhere between 70 and the full 96 hours available at this point.”

He informed that two aircrafts, a submarine and two sonar buoys are being used for looking for the vessel, he brought to attention that the area where the operations are being conducted is “remote”, which is making things difficult.

He added that the teams employed for the operations were ” taking this personally ” and were doing there best to find the missing vessel.

Hamish Harding, a 58-year old businessman and explorer is onboard the missing submersible along with four other people.

He posted on social media before boarding the vessel that he was ” proud to finally announce ” that he would be exploring the wrecks of the Titanic and added with it that due to the ” worst winter in Newfoundland in 40 years, this mission is likely to be the first and only manned mission to the Titanic in 2023″.

He informed later ” A weather window has just opened up and we are going to attempt a dive tomorrow.”

Going by information from OceanGate, the Titan submersible weighs 23,000 pounds or 10432.625 kgs and is made of carbon fibre and titanium.

In terms of safety, it makes use of ” proprietary real-time hull health monitoring (RTM) system ” which inspects the pressure on the vessel and it’s structure on the whole, as is stated by the manafacturers.

If there would be any issue, they would trigger ” early warning ” to the pilot to have ” enough time to … safely return to the surface.”

A submersible differs from a submarine as it has less power in comparison to it, so it requires a ship that can launch and recover it, as per the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Last year, CBS correspondent David Pogue boarded the Titan submersible and went on to explore the the remnants of the Titanic, when OceanGate invited him. He observed and said that the hatch was shut from the outside with 17 bolts, there was no other way to exit the submersible.

Since there is no scope for GPS underwater only the text messages to the submersible from the ship lead the way.

Pogue talking about his trip said that communications got lost during a dive and the track from the vessel was lost for about two hours.

How the operations are being undertaken

The US Coast Guard on Monday tweeted that the operations will take place during the nighttime too. The surface of the ocean came under the scanners when when initial reports of the vessel being lost came.

The US Air Force’s 106th Rescue Wing is flowing all over the area along with two C-130 flights. The Polar Prince, the ship which was assisting the vessel is also taking part in the operations.

Finding the vessel is one thing, rescuing it can be challenging at next level. There might not be a lot of developed mechanisms for rescue operations as the depth and the location of the vessel has to be taken into account.
