The Scream franchise is an iconic series that has stuck around with fans of horror and slasher films for decades. The film’s clever writing, a unique blend of humour and horror, and its (mostly) unpredictable plot twists have helped the franchise gain a massive fan following throughout the years. The intense suspense, unexpected twists, and clever nods to the horror genre make Scream a gripping and memorable slasher film that reinvigorated the genre for a new generation of horror fans.

The Franchise

The first film (1996) set in the town of Woodsboro, follows Sidney Prescott, who finds herself at the center of terrifying events when she becomes the primary target of a masked killer, calling himself the Ghostface. Sidney along with her friends must unravel the mystery behind the masked killer before any of them become the next victims.

In 2023, the Scream franchise returns with its sixth installment, a sequel to the previous film (referenced as a “requel” in the film) Set in New York, the story follows Samantha and Tara as they once again find themselves on the run from the menacing Ghostface. Scream V (2022) deserves applause for its ability to have successfully introduced a fresh setting, a modern time frame, and a new generation of protagonists, all while preserving the core essence of the series (while, of course, also maintaining the character’s abilities to just stay alive through just about a hundred attacks).

The fifth film centers around Samantha Carpenter (played by Melissa Barrera), who wrestles with the haunting legacy of her father, Billy Loomis, the original masked killer. As Samantha confronts her fears and seeks to forge a connection with her half-sister Tara (played by Jenna Ortega), the movie delves into the complexities of their shared history and potential ties to the dark world of serial killers.

The sixth film of the Scream franchise starts off with a gripping cold open that sets the tone for the rest of the movie. The renowned, Ghostface, in this film, returns vengeful, and this shows in his attacks on people. The days of slasher attacks being hidden in the comfort of people’s houses seem to have gone as here, he relentlessly runs behind them cutting them up in public settings, not fearing a crowd or risk of being caught. The killer chases the “Core-Four” (the sisters, along with Mindy and Chad) as they try to figure out who the masked assassin behind them is.

What Makes the Film

Although a slasher film, this movie is not just mindless gore and deaths. There are moments like the unveiling of the “Stab-Shrine” theatre room and Mindy’s heart-pounding encounter with multiple Ghostfaces on a Halloween night train, that will undoubtedly leave u gripping your seat, in anticipation of what might happen next.

The film skilfully reintroduces old characters, allowing them to reclaim their legacies while also emphasizing the importance of passing the torch to a new generation. It navigates this balance between honouring the contributions of the main few of the older films and acknowledging the shift to a newer generation of voices.

The film, although not perfect, is a great watch for fans of the genre and the franchise. The franchise’s unique ability to constantly reinvent itself while staying true to the original idea of the film solidifies its status as a modern horror classic.
