On the occasion of the 9th International Yoga Day 2023, in India, Gujarat set the world record for largest gathering of people to perform yoga, while in J&K yoga was performed by children on the world’s highest rail bridge.
Today, 21st of June, 2023, the entire world celebrated the 9th International Yoga Day. The global celebration of the 9th International Yoga Day witnessed diverse and unique styles of yoga practices, drawing a significant number of participants on Wednesday.

June 21 was declared as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations in December 2014 following a proposal by India, which received support from an unprecedented 175 member states.
Gujarat sets new Guinness World Record
The people of Surat, Gujarat, set a new Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people for a yoga session in one place with more than 1 lakh attendees. They were joined by the Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
According to the Chief Minister’s pre-Yoga Day session address, approximately 12.5 million individuals participated in the Yoga Day celebration across 72,000 locations in the state of Gujarat.
In his address he also stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has popularized yoga and pranayama, which has previously helped a lot of people during the covid-19 pandemic.
During the event, the Chief Minister made a statement announcing the state government’s initiative to establish 21 ‘Yog Studios’ in the near future with the aim of promoting yoga.
He mentioned that the state Yog Board has already provided training to 5,000 instructors for the same and expressed the government’s plan to launch these 21 Yoga Studios across the state.
In commemoration of the nation’s 75 years of independence, the state government of Gujarat chose 75 “iconic locations” within the state to observe the Yoga Day celebrations.
The places that were selected span across the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad, the White Rann of Kutch, the Statue of Unity in Kevadia, and the Modhera Sun Temple, as stated by the State Government in an official press release.
Yoga on World’s Highest Rail Bridge in J&K
In honor of the 9th International Yoga Day, a special yoga session took place on the Chenab railway bridge located between Bakkal and Kauri in the Reasi district.
The yoga event was organized by the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports of the union territory. The event was organized for children from various age groups and they were seen performing various asanas.
Situated above the river, the Chenab bridge stands at an impressive height of 359 meters (1,178 feet), surpassing the Eiffel Tower’s height in Paris by a minimum of 35 meters.
This arch bridge forms an integral component of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL), which holds a significant value of ₹35,000 crore. It serves as a crucial connection between Katra and Banihal.
